For a day, I wanted to remember it all. It was a slow Sunday, but no slower than usual. I recorded every word I heard, and then I began writing. First on paper, running the audio back again and again, transcribing as though I were preparing for an exam. But it wasn’t enough; my body felt uninvolved.

I needed a more physical process, so I began again, etching the words into the backs of aluminum cans. I was left with dozens of sheets of metal that caught the light beautifully. When photographed, the words became mirrored and almost illegible. And as I quilted them together, the shifting shadows and light created entirely new forms.
